Lighter colors may, however, discolor, so it is always better to do multiple bakings of thinner layers. When polymer clay sits for any length of time, it sort of “gels” up and needs to be mixed or kneaded to make it workable again. Sculpey clay is a type of polymer clay that can be molded into almost any shape and then hardened in your oven at home.If you want to be sure that your oven is at the correct temperature, you can use an external oven thermometer to double check. The slight texture of the chopping board not only makes rolling easier but also contributes to the ‘tenderising’ process. Adding Sculpey Clay Softener or other brand of clay softener is the very best thing to mix with your clay.

my difficulty is how to insert it into the finished clay neatly without accidents (eg kink pokes through the clay). It’s common to read recommendations in forums to set your oven to, for instance, 215°F (100°C) and bake for an hour or so. It would be lovely if every bar of polymer clay was as soft and supple as the day it came off the factory conveyor belt. Related to this is another slight drawback during modelling; that it neither sticks nor merges as readily to itself as natural clay, modelling wax or plasticine. It doesn’t matter what shape you make, just make something so the pin doesn’t just pull straight out. On the other hand this means that very fine detail becomes difficult to ‘read’ properly while modelling.
