About this deal

It’s kind of a cross between a white cake and a hummingbirdcake in flavor. It’s one of my go-to cake flavors whenever I’m making something for a crowd. It’s simple, tender, delicious and pairs up with pretty much any frosting flavor under the sun. To make sure the rainbow cake comes out a lovely vibrant colour, you need to use good quality bake safe food colourings. I’ve tried the liquid food colours you find in supermarkets in the past and while they look great as you make the batter, they fade in the oven. How to make a rainbow cake from scratch, easily!! Fail-proof buttermilk vanilla cake recipe that’s delicious, easy and downright impressive!”

Now, measure out the same amount of flour, sugar, and butter/margarine. Or just add 200g of each. Add them all to your mixing bowl. Finally, add the vanilla. If you have young children you might need to hold the spoon while they pour in the vanilla or vice versa. Older children should manage this on their own. Here’s some rough pictures to allow you to have a better understanding of how to achieve the spread effect, and enjoy the beauty of this rainbow cake: Preheat the oven to 170C/150C Fan/Gas 3. Grease 6 x 20cm/8in loose bottom sandwich cake tins (approximately 4cm/1½in deep) and line the bottoms with greaseproof paper. Dust the tins with flour, then shake out the excess.

This spectacular rainbow cake is a guaranteed showstopper. It’s so colourful but easy enough to make from scratch – simply make a basic cake and add some food colouring. It’s so easy, it’s perfect for kids.

Pour the food coloured milk to the two bowls of cake batter and stir them in with a clean spoon or spatula. Bake the rainbow layered cake

This is such an easy recipe which means it’s great for kids who want to give a helping hand. Children can help measure and mix everything together to make the cake batter as well as adding in the rainbow colours. Get your kids to measure out all the ingredients and add them to a large mixing bowl or free-standing mixer. I’m really selling this cake recipe aren’t I? Ha! Well might as well add another great thing I love about it: It’s VERY forgiving if you overmix it! Huge bonus since we’ll be doing a lot of stirring when we add in our food coloring. Add in the powdered sugar. Half a cup at the time to increase maximal incorporation and not making a mess!

Just look at all those happy vibrant colors!! Wouldn’t you feel special if someone made this for you? Especially if you thought you were receiving just a regular ol cake? I know I would! The last time I made something rainbowish on my blog was when I made these rainbow (tie dye) cupcakesfor Isaac when he was potty trained.

To make the icing, put the butter and cream cheese into a bowl and beat until smooth. Add half the icing sugar and mix well. Then, add the remaining icing sugar and beat until smooth. Place the base colour in first. Tilt the springform pan such that the base colour is able to spread almost or already to the ends and circumference of the pan. The five 18cm round pans allow you to bake all of the luscious layers at once, instead of needing to clean and refill a pan in-between bakes, so you can get your oven switched off sooner, and get on with the exciting part – assembling your rainbow cake! I’ve listed the ingredients for all the layers as well as for making two layers at a time. What can I use instead of self raising flour? Optional items include toppings such as rainbow sprinkles, funfetti, sliced almonds, chocolate and so on!

Preheat your oven to 180C / 160C Fan / 350F and grease 2 x 20cm (8 inch) loose bottomed cake tins with butter and line the base with a circle of greaseproof / baking paper. Mix the cake ingredients together Add a splash of milk to two small bowls then add some food colouring to each. Start with a little bit of colour then keep adding it until you have the right hue. Carefully trim the tops off any cakes with a bread knife that look at all uneven. Then put the first layer down on your cake stand or plate. Spread a little buttercream icing on top and spread it out with a palette knife. Beat the butter and sugar together in a stand mixer or with a handheld electric whisk on a high speed until pale and fluffy. Turn the mixer to low speed and add the eggs bit by bit, mixing on high speed after each addition. Add the vanilla, then add half of the flour. Mix until combined, then add the rest of the flour and mix until you have a smooth cake batter.
