About this deal

In this steamy tale by USA Today bestselling author Meghan Quinn, an American searching for her purpose escapes to a Scottish town but finds more questions than answers when she meets a brooding yet handsome handyman. Rowen is put off by these American women and their ways. On the first day of running the shop, they are late on opening it, and, at one point, Bonnie messes in a well trying to get water but instead disturbs a colony of bats. These incidents make Rowen feel like he has to babysit them so they don’t ruin his parent’s business. The ignorant American stereotype is strong at certain times with Bonnie. Freshly fired from her third job in a row, Bonnie St. James has lost her way. So when she and her best friend stumble upon a “help wanted” post to run a coffee shop in the Scottish Highlands, they apply on a whim. Who knows? Maybe traveling to a new place is just what she needs to figure out her next move. Mr. Ferguson’s narration compounded my annoyance. I loved his Scottish accents but his voicing for Bonnie was stilted and the weird cadence completely threw off the comedic timing. I think if he’d been limited to only duet narration, or only voicing Rowan’s dialogue, I’d have bumped the story rating up. Emmerson, George S. (1995). A Handbook of Traditional Scottish Dance. Galt House Publications. p.50. ISBN 0969065361.

She was a bit much at times and "could" be funny. She was also self-centered, pushy and tried too hard to be funny if you know what I mean. Perhaps nothing captures the spirit of Scottish culture better than the sight of Highland dancing being performed at some Highland gathering in some far flung corner of the world. This sophisticated form of national dancing has been spread by Scottish migrants across the world and competitions are now regularly organised in Australia, Canada, South Africa, New Zealand and the United States. Whilst the majority of dancers now entered into these competitions are female, the roots of these ritualistic dances lay with warriors imitating epic deeds from Scottish folklore. These following steps are included in the SOBHD text book. [5] The required tempo is 114* beats per minute (bpm):The main characters of Bonnie St. James and Rowan MacGregor were well done and got better as the book went along. After Rowen hangs out with Bonnie while Dakota is on her date that starts the turning point for these two who were more enemies than friends. Even though, they are able to get along and work towards a common purpose of rejuvenating the coffee shop they still have hardships ahead of them. There are moments that challenge their relationship.

La Sylphide was the first ballet to successfully express the Romantic philosophy: a hero on the brink of complacency, who suddenly throws it all away in a search for true happiness – a search that in the end proves fruitless. The steamy parts in the book were very hot. If you struggle with sex scenes in a plot, this might not be the book for you. Of course, why are you reading a romance book at all?! hahaha The 2024 race takes place on Saturday 27th April and is a point-to-point trail ultramarathon along the southern 53 miles (85 km) of Scotland’s iconic West Highland Way trail through the Loch Lomond & the Trossachs National Park from Milngavie to Tyndrum. I do like characters with flaws because at least it feels more real even if they annoy me at times. This article possibly contains original research. ( March 2019) ( Learn how and when to remove this template message)Scottish Highland dancing is a celebration of the Scottish spirit. The dances are a spectacular combination of strength, agility, precision, movement, music, and costume. Unlike other dance mediums, Highland dances are generally danced solo and in competition. Dances are set to traditional Scottish music such as Strathspeys, Reels, Hornpipes, and Jigs all played by an accompanying bagpiper. The traditional dances are made up of intricate parts, called steps, with each dance usually consisting of 4 to 6 steps. Highland dancing is great fun and inclusive to anyone who thrills to the sound of bagpipes, not just those with a Scottish heritage. Every character was lovable, even Fergus. The comradery between Bonnie/Dakota and Rowan/Isla/Leith/Lachlan were #friendshipgoals. And I'm wondering if the twins really do have some videos I could watch. 🤣 The heroine, Bonnie, was too qUiRkY for my taste. Like we get it bitch, you eat a lot of cake and you haven't had an orgasm in a few months...I don't need to hear about it in every one of her chapters 🙄

The Highland Fling – One legend associates it as a warriors dance of triumph following a battle. It was supposedly danced over a small round shield, with a spike projecting from the centre, known as a Targe. Yet another legend links the dance to a young boy imitating the antics of a stag rearing and wheeling on a hillside; the curved arms and hands representing the stag’s antlers. When the friends arrive in the tiny idyllic town of Corsekelly, they instantly fall for the gorgeous Highland landscape and friendly townspeople. But Bonnie finds a less-than-warm welcome in Rowan MacGregor, the rugged local handyman. Busy wrestling his own demons, Rowan’s in no mood to deal with the quirky American - even if she is a bonny lass. Eight-step dance: very rarely at Scottish Official Board of Highland Dancing (SOBHD) competitions, although it is still danced at some traditional Highland Games. John was involved with Moray Firth Radio in Inverness for around 26 years, behind the scenes at first, then progressed to sometimes guest presenting on Scottish music programs while the regular presenter was on holiday, he then became regular presenter of a "Piping Hot" programe, and for 8 1/2 years co-presented a three hour weekly program of Scottish music and song, "All Scottish" John was also involved in Hospital Radio in Inverness for many years.John's main occupation was with the Scottish Ambulance Service which he served with for 30 years before retirement 16 years ago. I was wondering if she used humor and being ridiculous all the time because she wasn’t confident with herself, her life or what her purpose would be. Featuring: sunshine & grump, small town, slow burn and dual 1st person POV ~ an absolute perfect choice for these characters.

Rowan, or Kilty McGrumpyShire, is the town handyman and grump. He's the sweetest grump though, once you get to know him. I didn't care for him for a minute towards the end there, but I suppose it was understandable. His hobby is adorable. I thought this book worked really well because while it was less steamy than some other books Quinn’s written, this one had more depth. I also liked how goofy the protagonist was, although I know some other readers found Bonnie to be a bit much. I thought she balanced really well with the other characters though, they played nicely off of each other. The relationships also faced significant conflicts, the love interest had actual obstacles he was trying to overcome, and there was real tension. There weren’t just silly fights about ridiculous misunderstandings, the issues were major and felt organic to the story. (You don’t always get that with romcoms so I like when it feels like there are actual stakes.) And the romances were so sweet! I loved that both Bonnie and Dakota had romantic storylines, and they were both adorable. And I was expecting Rowan to be this super alpha douche since I’ve run into that with the other books I’ve read of hers, but he really wasn’t. He genuinely was lovable and just kind of crotchety and overcoming trauma. The Highland Fling is the perfect rom-com. Broody hero. Excellent banter. Slow burn. Interesting side characters. I truly loved this book. Who does it? Free-Spirits, thrill seekers, outdoor enthusiasts, sports enthusiasts, adrenaline-lovers, taxi drivers, accountants, landscape gardeners, astronauts, plumbers. Get the idea? That’s right: anyone from age 10 to 110 with a sense of fun and adventure.Rowan’s parents own the coffee shop that Bonnie and Dakota are going to be running, and while they’re out of time Rowan is sort of keeping an eye on things. Bonnie and Rowan do not hit it off right away. It’s almost like they clash a bit at first, but you can tell with some time they’ve got it bad for each other. I loved the banter these two had! The Highland Fling is referenced in the lyrics of Harlem hot jazz musician Harry Gibson's 1947 hit "Who Put the Benzedrine in Mrs. Murphy's Ovaltine?" [7] Alex Duthart, the great drummer in not only the Scottish pipe band world but, more importantly, the wider percussion world, best explained to me that the secret to music lies within the rhythms of the tune. In the Scottish idiom we have what people outside our idiom call ‘Scotch-snap’ or ‘Scottish-snap’. Strathspeys are one major tune style and tune type that is attributed to Scotland and Scottish culture. Within a strathspey there consists four beats in a bar of which the scantion can be described as strong, weak, medium, weak. There is ‘tension and relaxation’ within the beats creating this style of play where not a lot of time is spent on the beat. As soon as a dancer’s foot hits the floor during the Highland Fling they are taught to jump up again to the next beat, so for every beat they are thinking ‘jump’ and spend more time in the air then on the ground while dancing the Highland Fling (think of a golf ball bouncing on a hard floor). This is the ‘Scottish-snap’ that musicians from outside our idiom call our style of play or rhythms during strathspey playing. Actually, I know exactly what it was. She was rude, she was self-centered, she was kind of an asshole, she had absolutely no boundaries, and I honestly wonder how she caught Rowan's attention or managed to keep Dakota as a friend. She was inherently flawed, but it was too much. I love a flawed character because it makes them authentic and real, but the combination of faults we found in Bonnie made it hard to empathize with her or even cheer for her. In fact, I skimmed most of her internal monologue after a while because I just found it unbearable and whiny. I have some more thoughts about how her story worked out but, for the sake of spoilers, I'll keep my mouth shut. But just know I think how things played out was unfair in the long run and I'm still fuming about it. All of these important aspects must be understood. First, though, an overview. Scottish highland dancing can be divided into two specific areas: Highland and National. The Highland consists of four dances: The Highland Fling, The Sword Dance, The Seann Truibhas, and The Reel. These are all competitive dances and the most popular of dances in Scottish highland dancing. The National dances are also mostly competitive dances with a few demonstration dances.
