You reach today’s destination, Aussois, via a small balcony road, through larch and pine forests. The many Vauban fortifications bear witness to the village’s former strategic position, when Savoy was alternately French and Italian over the centuries. Cols of the day The long and demanding ascent of the Col de l’Iseran from the north is 47 km, making it the longest mountain pass in France. However, gradients are moderate with 4% average and 7% max. The road leads you first up to the busy ski resort of Val d’Isère, before entering high-alpine terrain on the last 16 km. You’ll enjoy beautiful views on this, your first high mountain experience of the route. Albeit the moderate gradients, you have to climb 2,000 m to reach the Iseran’s magnificent summit. This Col would not classify as the highest one in the area, but it's worthwhile to include it in a ride as it is in a very beautiful part of the French Alps. It is located between the departments of Hautes-Alpes and Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, and connects the Ubaye Valley with the Queyras valley and Embrun. The D902 road curls up and around the Col, which makes it one of the highest mountain roads of Europe - but sadly, also one of the worst maintained ones. Early coach operators began offering excursions to high passes like Galibier and Lauteret, where hotels and restaurants soon opened to cater for early tourists.Right after you've devoured the magnificent Col de la Colombière, the Route des Grandes Alpes dunks into the heart of this enchanting scenery through the famous villages of Grand-Bornand and La Clusaz, and of course the Col des Aravis, and its fairytale landscape. Guillestre ligt vervolgens een stuk lager, op 1000 m hoogte. Vanaf daar rij je door naar Vars, waar je de Col de Vars neemt. Deze bergpas ligt op 2111 m hoogte. Vervolgens rij je nog een stuk door naar het op 1030 m hoogte gelegen Barcelonnette.
