About this deal

Oud’s like an enigmatic character. It’s got depth, like an ocean of stories in a single drop. But hold your horses, it’s not playing the gender game. Oud doesn’t have a him or her tag. Similar to other naturally-derived notes in perfumery, an ingredient's scent differs depending on it's provenance. "The scent of oud oil is very complex," says Gilbert. "It's warm, slightly sweet; imagine the sweet and gloopy flavour of balsamic vinegar without the acidic side. Resinous, woody, earthy like a forest floor, fruity like cherries, bitter, smoky, very animalic, between tanned leather and goats, with a bit of blue cheese," describes Gilbert. What does oud bring to a fragrance? There are some 'bases' that perfume houses make which approximate the smell of oud, and contain a blend of synthetic and natural ingredients - important to capture the complexity of oud itself," says Gilbert. Due to the high cost and rarity of natural oud oil, perfumeries often use the smallest percentage in conjunction with other ingredients such as cypriol or patchouli. What does oud smell like? And then vanilla comes into play — giving it a velvety smooth sweetness.

What Maison Francis Kurkdjian have done here, is to create a very safe modern rose, vanilla and oud combo. And they nailed it! Now, for those of you who don’t know… LuxuryIf you LOVE the smell of real roses… and you’re bored of all the sweet syrupy rose fragrances — then maybe this is for you. Ispahan, also known as Rose d’Ispahan (and Pompon des Princes), is a clear pink, half-open kind of Damask rose. This is super-long-lasting – up to 10 plus hours. Although, it’s quite subtle and doesn’t shout out for attention… but it leaves a beautiful scent trail. Oud have been a staple in Middle Eastern perfumery for centuries. It's also used in Japanese and Indian cultures as incense. Due to the scarcity of the agar tree, it's now illegal to harvest the resin in the wild. This smells super high-quality and is perfectly blended. The scent has a delicious praline note, which rakes in some nice compliments. For the creation of Portrait of a Lady, Malle commissioned Dominique Ropion. (Widely considered to be the industry’s best perfumer.)

And, as time goes by, whispers of slightly sweet honey join the party, to give the scent some beautiful warmth. Nice. It is called “ essential” because it contains the essence (the most important part) of the plant — its fragrance. This is super versatile: All seasons all occasions, and would make a beautiful signature scent. However, this is more suited for the mature crowd — so suggest 20-up. This is NOT a powerhouse projection perfume. In fact, it’s quite subtle, yet it has decent lasting power.

This is a type of fragrance for when you want to smell your absolute best: Special occasions, dates, nights out, formal occasions, etc… Sophisticated Serge Lutens are a French luxury fragrance house, and in case you’re wondering… La Fille de Berlin translates to “The Girl of Berlin.”Let me break it down for you… Furthermore, it’s soon joined with a pinch of oud and patchouli — which give it a slightly woody earthy quality. However, the citrus and ginger balance it out and keep it smelling light and zesty. And due to its rarity — it is super expensive. In fact, to create this fragrance, MFK have used a protected super-high grade of Laotian Oud. Maison Francis Kurkdjian are a luxury niche perfume house, co-founded in 2009, by the legend master perfumer himself: Francis Kurkdjian. So, is there already a synthetic oud fragrance? Yes, and not exactly. "Synthetic oud doesn't really exist per se," Voelkl explains. "But what we do to replicate the smell of natural oud in our fragrances, is create substitutes that are compositions using a combination of other natural [ingredients] and some [synthetic] molecules. I like to use some of these alternatives in my formulas as they are generally 'softer' and less animalic-smelling compared to that of natural oud extract." The oil that is extracted using a steam distillation method, are called rose otto or attar of roses. And oil that is extracted using solvents, are called rose absolutes.

Furthermore, this collection is created by Dior’s very own in-house master perfumer: François Demachy — who chooses only the finest natural ingredients from all over the world. And, as time goes by, it evolves into a beautiful soft pink musky rose, with the occasional waft of citrus. Nice. Also known as agarwood, oud is produced when the mould phialophora parasitica infects the aquilaria (or agar) tree to produce a dark, fragrant resin that essentially works as the tree's defence mechanism. Oud ranks highly as one of the world's most expensive raw materials as it takes hundreds of years to produce the resin. Plus, the aqularia tree is fast depleting due to over-harvesting and habitat loss. Where do perfume houses source oud? This is unisex and more suited for the sophisticated 20-up crowd.
