About this deal

You want some 21st-century touches: Lately we’ve seen a few turntables with Bluetooth, or USB outputs. This ain’t one of them.

It’s understandable that you may be considering buying a second-hand record player, especially if you’re only planning to use it infrequently. You're after bass: There's some good extension, but control and solidity aren't really up there with the best. This Japanese electronics giant is a true household name. Of course, turntables represent only a small share of the products Sony produces, but it does produce some models aimed at budget and high-end buyers. Its budget offering gives you automatic start/stop and a USB output for a reasonable price. For those who want to spend a little more, you can buy a turntable with a high-resolution digital output that Sony claims can transfer your vinyl into digital music files in higher-than-CD quality. TEACIn our review, we wrote: "This isn’t the most out-and-out accomplished turntable you can buy in purely sonic terms, but it’s not far off – and it’s more robustly made, better specified and has greater cachet than any price-comparable alternative. " Playing vinyl records is a great hobby. It's easy to get started and you don't need to spend a fortune to do so. However, like any hobby, there is both good and bad products out there at both ends of the price/performance spectrum. In general, a record player or turntable needs to do three basic separate, interrelated jobs to successfully play a vinyl record. Some players perform these three jobs better than others and cost much more for the commensurate research, development, and precision manufacturing costs that went into producing them. Also worth considering is this: do you want to rip your vinyl to your digital library? If so, look for a turntable with a USB output and reliable software to get the job done.

The Pro-Ject Debut Carbon is still one of the best entry-level hi-fi turntables you can buy, even though it has been usurped by the more recent model at the top of this list. While vinyl newcomers may cringe at the relatively high price here, we've tested it and can safely say it's actually an incredible bargain. TEAC (the lower-end models only such as the TN-100, LPR500/LPR550, LPU192CD, LP-P1000, and MC-D800) **(Uses Hanpin FU-700/R200 models and Skywin)** You want high-end styling and build: We like how this turntable looks, but it doesn't feel particularly luxe or well-built. We like a bit of tech here at the Fizz, especially when it solves a problem with effortless style. Anyone who still has a box or two of trusty vinyl records collecting dust should take a look at what must be the smartest turntable we've ever set eyes on, designed by retro Brit gadget lovers GPO.It sounds fantastic. It doesn’t matter the sort of music you like to listen to either, the Debut Carbon Evo laps it up. In our testing we noted that every circumstance delivers a detailed and revealing listen, able to focus on the minutiae even as it describes the complete picture completely convincingly. It has all the warmth and weight the vinyl format is famous for, but it doesn’t get bogged down – instead it simply motors along in the most natural way imaginable. turntables will also need an amplifier (if you're not plugging in via a hi-fi system that has one, or using self-powered speakers; record players in contrast have amplifiers built-in, although do take care as sometimes the terms turntable and record player are used interchangeably) The Audio-Technica AT-LP60XBT is our top budget choice, and an excellent option for beginners. Setting it up is fairly straightforward, but does require some assembly. You can use it with a wired connection to speakers or headphones, or wirelessly via Bluetooth. With a built-in phono equalizer function, Audio-Technica says that you can use the AT-LP60XBT without a “phono amplifier or connectable equipment with a built-in phono amplifier”. You can also use it with your own external phono amplifier if you prefer. So what does the Marantz TT-15S1 get you over the competition? Attention to detail. During our testing, we were pleasantly surprised to find that just about every part of the record player has been pored over to be the best it can be for the price. The fit and finish are excellent and it's very pleasant to handle these high-quality components. User-friendly and as painless as possible, the SL-1500C stands on four hefty rubberized feet with a lot of articulation. A switchable phono stage proves useful along with a switchable auto-stop feature –we've gone into great detail about these in our extensive review.

November 11th, 2016 - Added Laser brand. Fixed formatting for consistency. Overhauled the list again to make it alphabetic. International brands has been rearranged by popularity. If the Clearaudio Concept and Marantz TT-15S1 seem similar, that’s because the Marantz was built by Clearaudio to Marantz’s specifications. That means everything about the excellent build quality of the Marantz carries over to the Clearaudio Concept, so this this is a turntable that is as gorgeous as it sounds. Here are the following brands and models (if applicable for certain brands) to avoid, which are made from the Skywin (which shares the lionshare of "Crosley" clones in the market, Leetac, Hanpin (model FU-700/R200 models), and other OEM factories:

GPO Piccadilly - Modern Vinyl Players

You tend to play unmastered records: If a record is poorly mastered, you're going to hear every single little bit of detail of it. If you're an audiophile that can notice the subtle differences and nuances of the devices you're playing music on, you need a high end turntable. Major credit and props go to the moderators, regular posters, and various people in r/vinyl who helped me make this guide happen.
