About this deal

The family home is targeted with what seems like random acts of vandalism but each family member thinks these attacks are brought on by something they did.

In some ways, this book was what I expected: a twisty thriller full of family drama and Capital S Secrets.Bringing their own unique and counter-balanced personalities to proceedings they ask questions such as: what is happiness? After a betrayal that sent their marriage into freefall, Hannah and Sam are desperate for a fresh start with their eight-year-old daughter Lily—and where better than picture-perfect Owl Cottage in beautiful Cornwall.

But within pages I soon discovered I was wrong, as a character or fact was introduced which opened up a realm of new possibilities. Thomas is a real estate agent, Vivian an interior decorator, Eli a college football star, Tarryn a moody teenager. I agree, there seems, from the blurb, to be a lot of property destruction for the neighbors and police to just chalk it up to teenage pranks! The police investigation had several unexpected twists that helped to create suspense and cast some suspicion upon several characters. There are other voices too, in the first person, the victim and her parents, which zigzag back and forward in time, and another anonymous voice whose identity will keep you guessing.

Like all Teresa Driscoll’s books, the writing style is easy to read, fast-paced and with enough description to drop you right into the action. But when a smoke bomb is tossed on their front lawn, and their car’s tires are punctured, the family begins to worry. I have read all her titles and absolutely love her writing and the crazy, interesting, twisty stories that she usually comes up with. I didn't mind Vivian, her secret was a bit humorous and, although she wasn't doing a real good job of it, she was trying to hold her family together.

In the first instance, despite it being a police investigation, most of the work is done by a private detective. Traveling Cloak reviews fantasy, science fiction, space opera, horror, and every once in a while literary fiction. Access to the Plus Catalogue—thousands of Audible Originals, audiobooks and podcasts, including exclusive series. In this five-part series, US happiness expert and positive psychologist Michelle Gielan and British journalist and author Oliver Burkeman explore ways to become truly happier, backed up by scientific evidence. But Sophie can’t shake the feeling that she’s made an unforgivable mistake and now her whole family is in danger.

There’s ultimately a lot made of the fact that Thomas and Viv strive obsessively to appear ‘perfect’ to the outside world. I think my biggest gripe was the secrets in general seemed a bit unnecessary, like characters thinking 'this might be relevant, but I won't tell anyone'. Authors and publishers may use excerpts and links, provided that full and clear credit is given to Short Book and Scribes and shortbookandscribes. A very cinematic, and visual storytelling style is employed from the very beginning, which pulls you in to the mystery , alternating between what is going on behind Gemma’s medicated sleep and Matthew’s investigations . My thanks to Rhiannon Morris from FMcM for the place on the tour and for sending a proof copy of the book for review purposes.
