About this deal

Over the course of this film, you’ll see how that war is hell just as the phrase goes and what it can do in terms of desensitizing the soldiers along the way. I remember being blown away by the first part because it was the best depiction of boot camp I'd seen on film. Ermey disappears fairly early in the film, while Baldwin doesn’t appear until around the 65-minute mark.

The film was digitally remastered and finished as a Digital Intermediate in a process supervised by Kubrick’s longtime assistant, Leon Vitali, with high dynamic range color grading in HDR10. It may not quite be top-tier Kubrick, but it's damn close, and a tremendous anti-war movie nonetheless. Choppers flew past neatly, and their blades seemed to engulf us when we watched folks on board them. The only instance Ermey had to film more than two to three takes was in the "Jelly Doughnut Scene," which he claimed was filmed in 37 takes, to the point his voice kept disappearing from time to time. According to IMDb, this movie has received a (new 2020) 4K DI (digital intermediate) and was shot on 35MM film using Arriflex 35 BL, Arriflex 35 IIC, and Fries Mitchell 35R3 cameras with spherical lenses.

Later on, after boot camp, Joker will serve during Vietnam and despite working as a journalist will see his share of some action. Joker is torn in his feelings about being a soldier and his experiences are only more eye opening as he journeys on. When I eventually saw it, I thought it was interesting, but it took me several viewings and a few courses at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh (RIP) to fully appreciate Kubrick’s messages and symbolism. For a 1987 film that seems odd, considering that Stereo was around and films were being released in the format. For starters detail is excellent, promoting a cleaned up image that, but for a smattering of early shots, does not appear to have had too heavy an application of DNR scrubbing (there are a couple of mid-range shots where the faces look a little bit too clean), and still has a nice texture to it commensurate to the filming style.Natural film grain is much more pronounced with a much higher level of clarity than previous editions. Now, let’s take some time to look back on the 2007 Blu-ray Disc release of the film in comparison with this new 2020 4K UHD Blu-ray release. This time, the focus is on the Vietnam war in 1967, centering on a group of marines going through intense boot camp and traveling overseas to fight. It's quite ironic, as Joker states in the middle of the film when he is questioned on why he has a peace symbol on his marine helmet.
