Speaking of assistants, we’re kind of disappointed that Samsung didn’t build an always-listening assistant into the Galaxy Buds 2, and it might mean that they’re less compelling for folks who don’t want to have to tap a button to summon their voice assistant.

They’re smaller and less obtrusive than the others. They have a light fit, but not so light that I keep worrying that they’re going to pop out because of the weight on the exterior side.

The only fly in the ointment is battery life, which is a claimed five hours of continuous playtime with ANC on (or eight without it) and up to 18 hours in the cradle. This is acceptable rather than class-leading and we had hoped for a little extra stamina. The accompanying charging case is the same dimensions as the Buds Pro’s at 50 x 50 x 28mm (WDH), and the two also share the ability to be charged wirelessly via a Qi charger or by simply using the included USB-A to USB-C cable. Requires a smartphone with the SmartThings app and a Wi-Fi or Bluetooth connection. Compatible smart devices must be initially set up in the SmartThings app. Our first impressions of the earbuds are that they sound incredibly open and clear. Play Dua Lipa’s Levitating and her voice is delivered loudly and with ample detail. It sounds big and spacious, and there’s high energy to the tune that’s immediately attractive to listen to. The upgraded Samsung Seamless Codec encodes the full 24-bit audio and is decoded via Galaxy Buds2 Pro, maintaining that same 24-bit high-quality sound.

Lorde’s vocals come through prominently on Royals, but behind her are drum hits that don’t land with the intended impact. Bass is rather soft, instead of taut and driven. There’s enough of it, but it’s not well defined. And the forward-leaning treble – which is partly responsible for the impression of openness – has a hard edge that becomes fatiguing to listen to over long periods.

The Samsung Galaxy Buds 2 Pro sport a two-way driver design, with a 10mm woofer and 5.4mm tweeter in each earbud. It's a formidable improvement on Samsung's previous earbud releases too, with YoDogg and Cardo's NIP(streamed in 360 reality audio, on Tidal) sounding atmospheric and foreboding while snaking from one ear to the other in a talented display of immersive audio. Both the earbuds and cradle are available in a range of premium colors. Each bud is polished to a high gloss with a matte interior that feels soft against your skin. I had zero problems with the Galaxy Buds 2 Pro at the gym. There wasn’t a single time I was worried about them popping out. Sweat wasn’t a problem. They’re rated IPX7 for water resistance. I sweat a fair amount here in Florida, but not so much as to approximate being submerged in a meter of water for 30 minutes. That’d be really gross.You have to hand it to Samsung and AKG: each generation of the Galaxy Buds moves closer and closer to that sonic sweet spot, and the Galaxy Buds 2 are no exception. Conversely, the one odd omission on the features list is that the Buds 2 Pro don’t pause music when we take an earbud out. Samsung clearly thinks this won’t be needed if you’re relying on voice detect mode, but we’ve always found this a handy feature in daily use when using other earbuds like the Sony XM5 and AirPods Pro 2. Simply start talking and Voice Detect will turn off ANC and activate Ambient sound — allowing you to clearly hear the conversation without removing your Buds2 Pro.
