About this deal

It’s helped me understand that not everything is my fault and that my mental health issues are fixable. Such no-filter honesty, goes a long way to towards satisfying the (quite understandable) impatience for respite, that so often prevails over and above the need for ‘answers’…when clutching at paperback life rafts from the anxiety trenches! I implore *ANYBODY* who is;- struggling with their mental health- wants to learn more about mental health in general- wants to know how to help somebody who may be struggling with their mental health- is curious about how to look after their own mental health. It was a great reminder to take care of my mental health and how many struggled and are struggling with it.

I've just finished reading No Such Thing As Normal, it is aimed at those who struggle with mental health/those who are close to someone with mental health. As if I was the only one holding the absolute truth and the “right” way of perceiving the world, and anything else was either strange or abnormal. Reading self-help books has always been hit and miss for me, because I’ve never really felt I could relate to the author describing their severe alcoholism or the doomed children that learn from all they do. Take my example: a Swedish colleague once told me I was “scary”—“too emotional, too talkative, and too intense. It's like a manual, almost like a text book in fact, with lists of resources rather than anything insightful and practical. While it doesn't help to beat yourself up for not being normal, surely attempts to work on your mental health are about trying to get your brain to behave more normally?

In 2017 she won the MIND Making A Difference Award for her work in changing the perception of mental health in the media. I have read and listened to SOOO MANY books about mental health and self improvement over the last couple of years that I’m sure i could open a small library 😆, however, this one is the best by far, in my humble opinion.I borrowed No Such Thing As Normal: What My Mental Illness Has Taught Me About Mental Wellness from the library on impulse as it includes a chapter on lockdown and the pandemic. The real shift happened the day I decided to meet new people with the eyes of a child, with curiosity and a genuine interest to know them and connect with them, from the heart. If you are concerned with what other people think about you, know this and set yourself free: If they find you intelligent, stupid, ugly, or average, that has nothing to do with you. In the final chapter, though, Gordon looks at her subsequent experience of the pandemic and acknowledges that her mental health has deteriorated.
