About this deal

A short press on the function button – just above the throttle – toggles between three gears; Beginner, Standard and Pro, which controls what your top speed can reach and how fast you reach it. The Riley RS1 is a great option for those looking for an affordable electric scooter. It offers a decent range of 15 miles and a high top speed of 15 mph. The killer feature here is the removable battery, which makes recharging a dream, and cruise control is also a really useful feature. All the while an LED display between the handlebars lets you know exactly what’s going on; your speed in km/h, your battery level in 20% increments (though an idea of the remaining maximum distance possible would be better), and your speed setting. Although there are no specific laws in place, we also recommend riders wear a helmet and always follow the manufacturer’s safety guidelines.

If your budget is limited but you still want a cool little scooter to zip around on then we urge you to take a look at the Kugoo Kirin S1 Electric Scooter. We were pretty blown away with the specifications of this little dude, and found that it did everything really well. The only real aspect that let’s the side down is the looks of it and the finish of some of the materials. Not the end of the world if you can overlook these shortcomings. The Riley RS1 comes with front and rear lights and only weighs 13kg and comes with 1 year warranty - Provided by Riley Directly TECHNICAL DATA: For camping enthusiasts, an electric scooter can revolutionize your trips away due to a number of key features:The onboard E-ABS brake helps you regulate speed going downhill, while also recharging the battery. Of course, the beauty of the Riley RS1 is that you can swap the battery, so you may want to invest in a spare early on, or consider buying the more expensive RS2 which promises a maximum 28 mile-range per charge. After a recharge, I spent the next stint in Normal mode and the range was thankfully a lot better, with a few bars still remaining after a six-mile ride. Out of the box, the Riley RS1 strikes you as a well designed piece of engineering . It bears a passing resemblance to the excellent Segway Ninebot G30 Max but at almost half the weight (13kg vs 23kg) and 45% cheaper I would say the Riley has several factors in its favour (if the enormous range of the Segway is not high up your list of priorities). Riding range, comfort and hill-climbing are the most important aspects to consider when choosing your e-scooter and, from a range point of view, the RS2 comes out well. After five miles of riding in the fastest (Sport) mode, I still had three bars of battery life left out of five, and you can swap the battery out for another should you need it.

Yet again, it’s important to make clear that electric scooters are classified as Personal Light Electric Vehicles (PLEVs) in the UK and are therefore illegal to use unless you ride on private land with the landowner’s permission or as part of an authorised rental scheme.

It’s easy to describe every electric scooter as ‘nippy’ but I really enjoyed the direct power deployment of the RS1 as I applied the throttle – it made me want to keep on riding, and also gave me the confidence getting going from a standstill. Other than that, I found acceleration was very smooth and the ride comfortable, with the 10in pneumatic tyres doing a good job of gliding over bumps in the road. The scooter’s 350W motor is best experienced in Sports mode, which makes a huge difference when accelerating from standstill and climbing hills. For example, I could climb up small hills easily in Sports mode, but found the scooter came to a gradual halt when going up the same hills in Normal mode. Of course, the big plus point here is the removable battery. In practice is a removable battery that useful? For convenience, it’s definitely handy to have a removable battery for easily recharging it at, say, a workstation in an office – instead of having to bring the RRS1 physically into the office (ditto at home). The wheels are 8.5 inches with puncture-proof solid tyres. The front wheel has an e-brake via the motor and there is also a disk brake in the rear wheel – this is reassuring! The tyres are 8.5” and air-filled which gives a supple ride. However, I’m personally not a fan of inner-tubed wheels on e-scooters because of the puncture risk. Basically if you get a puncture it is game over for using the scooter on the remainder of your trip, because the process of fixing it is so painful and time-consuming. With the Hawk, I recommend putting some innertube slime into the tyres as this will give protection against thorn and glass etc.

The handlebars are fairly standard, but include the brake lever for the left hand and a natty blue twist throttle to make the scooter zip off. The brake cable is coloured in the same blue and looks nicely coordinated. The throttle also includes a power on/off button and a switch to choose between different levels of maximum acceleration – beginner, standard and pro. This is useful when you first start as everybody tends to be a bit wary. However, soon you’re always switching to pro… Lighting

The Riley RS1’s standard battery, located in the column, is rated at 6.4ah and is enough to fuel journeys of around 25km (15 miles). The motor on the E365 is 350W average power and the voltage is 42V as opposed to the typical 36V seen on most electric scooters in this range of operation. This gives it some decent pep but uplifts the weight to 13kg. This is a manageable weight but you can definitely feel it if you are lifting for more than a few minutes. Range is better than average for this price point at around 15-20 miles maximum depending on your weight.
