About this deal

Plus, voice control allows access to your camera when mounted out of reach, such as on the included invisible selfie stick. After testing, phones equipped with Qualcomm SDM765 5G chips have poor hardware decoding capabilities and are not supported for use, such as OPPO Reno 3 5G. Lowlight performance was usable, though clearly not the X3’s strong suite - expect a sprinkling of noise and artefacts on your footage once you correct the exposure. The app has presets for all the major social media platforms, so uploading clips to share couldn’t be easier or quicker and, if that wasn’t enough, there are also desktop apps for macOS and Windows, plus plugins for Final Cut Pro X and Adobe Premiere for those who want a little more editing control.

Large, responsive buttons are easy to use, even when on the move or gloved up, with vibration feedback for clear command confirmation. With 360° capture, action-ready hardware and AI-powered software, the Insta360 X3 might just be the ultimate pocket camera. I prefer to use a 360 camera when I’m biking or skiing, mainly because the camera records in all directions at once, so I don’t need to worry about where it’s pointing; I can get on with my ride or my run and then reframe the footage so the camera’s viewpoint is pointing in the right direction when I get home. It's painless, though; our Mac Studio ripped through the conversion process, which stitches the footage from the two lenses together and saves it in a standard H.I connected the X3 to a motorbike with the optional Motorcycle Kit and Selfie Stick, and even with our sports bike’s clip-on handlebars, I was able to find a few mounting points. Put it next to a contemporary GoPro or Insta360’s other gear and you won’t be impressed, but stick to 360-degree footage and you'll see precisely where your money’s going.

Like the X2 before it, the X3 doesn’t give you any choice of attachments or modules, it instead includes two high-end fisheye lenses to deliver 360-degree camera footage. In addition to the main switch positioned on the side, you can also use an individually configurable function key. You can use a Insta360 X3 mounted to bike handlebars or a helmet, or you can just hold it and shoot video as you would with a phone. If you are desperate for that full-screen preview, you can get the Insta360 X3 to shoot in 9:16 instead and turn the camera on its side. And when you shoot in the single-lens mode, the only drawback when shooting at 16:9 is the preview image is smaller. We like the Insta360 X3 enough to name it our Editors' Choice winner for 360-degree cameras, the first model to earn the award since the Samsung Gear 360 in 2017.

The latter has released modular action cameras that give users the versatility of changeable lenses, but it’s also released wearable cameras like the GO 2, and, naturally, 360-cameras like the X3. Insta360 built its brand on dual-lens cameras, and creators who have stuck with the format have been well served by its One series of cameras. Roughly the same size as a pre-smartphone-era mobile phone (the Nokia 3310 undoubtedly comes to mind), the X3 is solid and hefty in the hand – with a build quality that suggests it’ll survive a drop or several. And for those interested in the materials used, the sides are plastic with a diamond embossed texture, for extra grip. The Insta360 X3 holds onto a 100% charge reading for a little too long, a popular tactic in consumer electronics. You do need to manually max out the brightness to make it hold up in bright sunlight, but it gets roughly as bright as the GoPro Max’s own.

Tappable icons let you swap the view between the two lenses, change resolution, frame rate, and other settings (depending on mode), and swap between the different capture modes: Video, Active HDR, Time Lapse, TimeShift, Bullet Time, Loop Recording, Star Lapse, Burst, Interval, HDR Photo, and Photo. It costs slightly less than the GoPro Max, although you can generally now find that dated camera for less online, while the Ricoh Theta X seems extortionate by comparison. Its large touchscreen makes it super easy to operate on the hoof, its extra modes offer more flexibility than its predecessor and its Loop Recording mode means you can now use it as an advanced, albeit expensive, helmet camera.Templates are included to speed up the process, and you can choose to output in a variety of aspect ratios: 16:9, 9:16, 1:1, or 2. You can work with video on a desktop platform using the Insta360 Studio package or on your phone or tablet with the Insta360 app. Insta360 has also nailed one of the most important parts of the pocket 360-camera workflow – editing your footage is a blast, and only takes a few minutes for shorter clips once you have a grip on the fairly intuitive and wide-ranging tools. Including the Insta360 X3 1800mAh Battery , Insta360 X3 Fast Charging Hub, Insta360 X3 Dive Housing and Insta360 X3 Quick Reader.
