Next is the fastest USB thumb drive I own. These predate me having the USB External M2 adapters. So I used to use them for salvage. Most of the time now they run various bootable things. But the read/write speeds are still impressive for a true USB Thumb drive. Sandisk Extreme 64GB (CZ80) Designed with portability in mind, this enclosure leverages a combination of aluminum top and plastic bottom to ensure it remains light yet capable of good heat dissipation. The SATA drives were all in a Startech USB M.2 SATA enclosure. The USB's are of course simply USBs. That's not a bad thing. Especially in the case of laptops, an older machine might support only M.2 SATA-bus SSDs, and that will be the boundary of your upgrade path...end of story. As a result, the only reasons you'd upgrade the drive, in that situation, would be to get more capacity, or if the old one failed.

When you install the kit 750-ADBF necessary to upgrade to the M.2 NVMe SSDs, you will wind up with two (2) front flex Bay positions that will support a M.2 module (Kit 575-BBSH). What I found was that you now have two (2) flex bay positions that will not recognize SATA or SAS Hard drives. (I had three SATA hard drives installed and one empty flex bay position). Now I can only use two of the flex bay positions for the SATA hard drives. If you install a SATA HDD module in one of these front flex bays configured for M.2 module, you get a flashing amber LED on the flex bay "door" and the SATA drive is not shown in Computer Management. Setup is made easy with the device supporting hot-swapping, allowing users to change SSDs without having to power down the device first. Additionally, it offers plug-and-play functionality, removing the need for driver installations and hence promoting a user-friendly approach.The enclosure showcases a Type C interface, a feature that enables double-sided insertion, advocating for versatility in its use. When it comes to speed, using USB-C Gen 2 10Gbps or Thunderbolt 3 is recommended to achieve its highest speed performance. Installing an SSD is pretty easy as you just need to unscrew the cover, attach the M.2 drive along with the optional cooling pad, screw in the mounting screw and reattach the cover. Unfortunately, both the cover and the mounting screw are 5-point star shaped screws, which are not very common. However, there’s a screwdriver in the box.

Generally if the drive is readable I'll boot off a custom WinPE disk I built and run USMT to salvage the user profile data to a compressed MIG store. Then I'll replace the drive or laptop, re-image, and restore the salvaged profile. So the faster the drive is the faster I can complete these tasks. Which makes users happier. I've been using a M2 Sata enclosure, but I also have 2.5" external cables that let me plug a 2.5" directly into a USB port. I assume the heat spreader is doing its job and spreading the heat, and the larger enclosure has more surface area to absorb/dissipate heat.

Nowadays, though, many lean, premium laptops can make use of PCI Express-bus M.2 SSDs. (Just about all new desktop motherboards with M.2 slots also support PCI Express M.2 SSDs, too.) With these, you may see a substantive increase in performance in benchmark testing, but in most real-world usage, they'll just feel like a fast, premium SATA SSD. But unless your desktop is a recent, high-performance model that supports this standard, being able to run a PCI Express 5.0 SSD at peak speeds requires a considerable additional investment. You must buy a recent desktop that supports SSDs built on the PCIe 5.0 standard, upgrade an existing recent rig, or build one from scratch. By making such an investment and having the T700 serve as its brains, though, you're future-proofing your entire setup.
