Catwalk Workshops

Friday, July 29th, 2011

The runway walk is an aspect that one so closely associates with a model, the perfect posture, the graceful stride and the underlying confidence so familiar to us all. However it is not something you are born with, the girls and boys from the catwalk didn’t strut as toddlers they all had to be taught.

catwalk workshop in Brighton

The art of the perfect walk is not reserved for models, it may not be necessary to stride down the pavement like you are walking down the runway for Chanel but certain aspects are great to use and make a real difference to any individual. Good posture brings an air of confidence to anyone, after all slouching is something we are all guilty of, and the way we walk and present ourselves is a key influence on the response we gain from others. Here at BM Models we offer catwalk workshops taught by director and model Bethania Matheus, the workshops teach you tips and techniques and really get you thinking about your movements. Each workshop is tailored to the group’s needs; budding models are instructed about the best means to show off the clothes they are wearing on the runway and non-models are given tips to focus on posture and confidence.

Each workshop initially gets you to all work together with exercises aimed to loosen you up and break down each element to be learnt. Walking may seem as natural as breathing but there are so many components when you actually have to think about what you are doing, for example do you know where you lead your body from when you walk? After she has passed her wisdom onto you, Bethania then focuses on everyone individually, tweaking and tuning you till you are positively perfect! Recent workshops include Sussex Fashion Awards, Brighton Fashion Weekbrides-to-be, models for Brighton designers Jo Fleming and Renaissance shows.

Applying to a Model Agency

Wednesday, July 27th, 2011

By Megan Salmon

These days as well as going to open castings at agencies looking for new faces you can do it via the comfort of your home through the magic of the internet. Almost all agencies have a ‘become a model’ section and application form. If you find an agency that you think fits with your look and aspirations then there is nothing lost by sending in an application! However when send an application to any model agency there are a few things you should consider:

Firstly read the agencies requirements of models if they have height preferences and you do not meet them then maybe you should reconsider your application. As horrid as that sounds they have written it there for a reason.

Secondly the images you send, the agency may require certain shots eg a head, profile and full length so it is best to follow these. Also the images you choose should be natural and unedited. Remember that you do not need professional photographs a model agency can judge your potential from any snapshot so please don’t waste a lot of money on unnecessary professional photoshoots.

Finally, as disheartening as it may be an agency receives many, many applications from aspiring models each day so if you don’t hear back then don’t be disheartened they won’t have the time to reply with advice to every application they receive.

Hope this little bit of advice is of use to you aspiring models, and best of luck in your application!

Training Tips For Gaining A Model’s Physique

Tuesday, July 26th, 2011

Being a Fitness model relies on their physique and body image to help pay the bills, which makes their training, fitness, nutrition and workouts important. Although many people believe that getting the ideal figure is tantamount to undergoing a challenging process you don’t actually have to make great deal of sacrifices to make your goals achievable. However, It does require dedication and commitment, which why following a great UK fitness blog does help.

All the training sessions will consist of low weights and supersets, which is a type of training routine. The supersets will only have 30-second breaks between each superset, you’ll need to cut down the weight so you won’t have to sacrifice form because of the heavy weights. Before you train, it is important to make sure you are in the ‘zone’ and focused.  This will help the mental barriers that you might face, which will help you achieve the physiological challenges ahead. This is important with superset training as you are pushing your muscles to absolute failure and fatigue.

Make sure that you are covering all major muscle groups in your weekly training sessions, including leg workouts. Most people don’t regard leg workouts in the same regard as the other parts of the body like chest and arms. However, this muscle group is the biggest, which will result in your body releasing more endodomophins, to help your muscles grow and tone. Light weights should be used in workouts, so reps will range anywhere from 15-to-20 to assure you fully exhaust your muscles. The only exception to this is abs, and reps should be the 25 range. Sets will be kept down to 3 per exercise, and rest in between each superset/exercise will only be 30 seconds.

In order maintain maximal conditioning, fitness models need to perform at least 60 minutes of cardio twice per week, on top of the superset workout. Before pumping up for a photo shoot, make sure look at yourself in the mirror and find the weak points that need improvement. For example, if your arms  aren’t as developed as the rest of your muscles, then you should focus on pumping up your biceps and triceps before any other muscle. In addition, a good tan can help bring out definition and detail. The darker you are the more defined you look. You can go to a tanning bed or simply buy tanning products. Along with a great nutrition plan.

2012 Lingerie Trends

Thursday, May 12th, 2011

Knowing what kind of dress to wear depends on the occasion and time of the year. It makes you look fashionable and also updated. Perhaps, you are not conversant with lingerie styles that are trending this year. Nevertheless, it is important to do your research first before you go shopping to ensure that you purchase pretty lingerie that you can wear throughout the year.

It is important to consider the color of the lingerie you purchase…

In 2012, R & B seems to have taken over the reign of colors. In the past, people had chosen orange color. This was very common in different occasions. Today, red and blue lingerie pieces are being seen all over. Perhaps, this might change later on in the year when many women will start to wear breezy blue and sensual red lingerie. You can also expect colors such as Indigo, scarlet red, violet, lilac, teal and magenta. This will give bright hues pops to different pieces of lingerie. Sublime colors may also feature later in the year. These include nude, cognac and also brown which might become basic lingerie staple pieces.

You also need to consider the style of the piece that you purchase…

Although some people are preferring plain lingerie with a single color, print styles might replace these lingerie in the future. Therefore, floral lingerie pieces may come back in a different twist. Instead of choosing regular daisy lingerie, you may choose blooms. Although they may look tribal and may be primitive, they are likely to be trendy later after everyone has bought the red and blue pieces. Vintage inspired lingerie may also appear later in the year. This style may be very crucial especially for those who like fun with their undergarments.

Go for a bustier…

Just like lingerie, bustiers have been worn for a long time. They have a Basque shape that nips in slimming the waist and still giving support to the bust.  Bustier is also trendy this year in different styles and colors which you may consider when you’re buying a lingerie.

Fabrics is another factor that you need to consider when buying your lingerie…

When it comes to creating lingerie, the trendy fabrics are satin silk and sheers. Nevertheless, the fabric used to make lingerie is not of great importance when you’re buying a lingerie. Many people will usually go for an undergarment that gives them extra delicateness and sensuality. Basically, when you look at the 2012 lingerie trends you will realize that many ladies are going for garments that add feminine vibe in them.

You can get trending lingerie pieces in a number of outlets today. Some are available in local boutiques while others are available online. Visiting a store that has a wide range of collection is important because it enables you to choose the one that pleases you and also bring out the elegance in you.

Perfect Men’s Winter Fashion Tips

Sunday, October 31st, 2010

It’s getting colder and colder now thanks to stupid nature, throwing a hissy fit every year about the same time…so predictable.

Don’t worry about it though, because now you’ve got an excuse to buy some new stuff that will keep you toasty warm and still looking sweet.

Here are some ideas to get you thinking about all the possibilities in these different situations.

Work

Sadly work does not stop for anything, even a ton of snow and low temperatures. The best thing to do for wintery work days is to make sure your footwear is sorted. This is partly to protect your smart kicks from the salt and wet, but also because most work shoes aren’t the best for walking on ice and you don’t want to end up on your face when you’re trying to look professional. You have two options – Brogue boots for style or Hiking boots for practicality.

Snow Day

If you tend to be out and about for work and you want to look smart, but not ‘work smart’ than there are two items you want to think about adding to your wardrobe. First is the strangely fashionable cable knit jumper. These are as practical as they are retro cool and will make you stand out in a crowd of regular v-necks. Also essential is the double breasted blazer. These have been popping up on loads of catwalks with a slimmed down and shortened design to avoid the normal fattening effect of regular shaped double breasted jackets.

Christmas Day

The big day, whether you like it or not, is not far off. You know you’re going to eat, drink and be merry, but do you know what you’re going to wear. Christmas day is all about comfort as you will have a lot of sitting around and indulging to do. This means cool t-shirts and comedy jumpers. Think Flight of the Conchords and you are in the right area. Just don’t go too far with it because a badly judged rude t-shirt could have your gran choking on the sprouts.

New Years

When New Year comes for some reason we all want to be outside trudging round from party to party despite predictably shocking weather. That’s why you need to invest in a big comfy duffle coat. They have been popular for quite a while but never really cut it in the style stakes until now. Try a fawn or other pale colour with a patterned jumper or cardigan underneath.

Do you have any other suggestions?

Dress Right For Your Body Type

Monday, October 25th, 2010

red dress Hove ModelsWhen it comes to our individual body types, new fashion trends can be intimidating. Whether you’ve got a few extra pounds or a straight rectangular shape, not all styles are going to work for every body type. So before you go out and by those expensive skinny jeans, or fitted lace top, take an honest look in the mirror. No really. Take a long look in the mirror. For once you understand how to accentuate the positive and most flattering parts of your body, it will be much easier to be confident and feel comfortable in your own skin.

  • The little black dress This is a must have in every woman’s closet. Black is not only a slimming color but it works on any body type. If you have an hourglass figure (waist smaller in proportion to your hips) try finding a dress that hugs and shows off your curves. If you have more of a rectangle shape (hips, and waist same proportion-otherwise known as a “boyish figure”) then pick a dress that also hugs your shape, but try adding a belt to give an illusion of some curves. And if you have an apple shape (larger around the mid section) then an A-line dress is your friend. It will flare out and hide any extra pounds. Avoid tight fitted dresses that will draw attention to your middle.

  • Tops If you have a fuller bust, then choose tops with a V-neck. If your neck is longer, then find a piece that falls off your shoulders. If your shoulders are broader wear deep V-necks and sleeveless or long-form fitting tops. Toned arms should be shown off in sexy spaghetti camisoles.

  • Footwear Your shoes will tie your whole oufit together, and its important not to slack when it come to this stylish staple. If you have larger calves make sure to stay away from boots that will fall on the biggest part of your leg. Instead, stick to an elegant heel, or find a boot that goes up to, or past, your knee. Also, neutral heels will give the look of a longer leg and add style to almost any dress.

Beauty is about symmetry. Giving the appearance of symmetry means looking proportionate. Whether or not you have an hourglass figure, it should be your goal to give the appearance of one (after all, men are biologically programmed to prefer this shape). This can be accomplished with most any body type if you know how accentuate what you’ve got. For example, wearing lighter shades combined with a dark, thick belt around your waist will help accomplish this. If you have a smaller bust don’t be afraid to try a padded bra.

Your shape and size do not matter as much as you think. The important thing is to work with what you have, and don’t be afraid to flaunt it! Confidences carries, and the more you have in yourself, the sexier you will look to others.

Insider’s information on the “glamorous” life of a model

Sunday, October 24th, 2010

New York Fashion week is well known for its economic impact as a result of the 232,000 attendees that visit New York Fashion week each year. Fashion designers, media/press, senior executives, buyers and others come from over 30 countries, making New York Fashion week a big international and popular event. Every model dreams of walking in one of the many different fashion shows and although this seems very glamorous and exciting, there are some things that are not as glamorous as you might have thought and I believe that not everyone is aware of the sometimes exhausting, painful, long and tiring shows models need to walk with quite often small-sized high heels. high heels models brighton Above you see a picture of a model that was walking the Louis Vuitton summer/spring 2012 show. The reason why models often have bruised and blistered feet is because the shoes, like the clothes, usually only come in a sample size. This significantly increases the chances that a model might need to walk for several hours in too small shoes, resulting in a very painful experience. Brian Reyes, a fashion designer who is known for his socialite and funky way of designing, noticed during his fall show of 2009 that his models were having a difficult time to walk in his shoes. The models occasionally took off their shoes, either in the middle or towards the end of the runway. This made Brian decide to have his models walk bare foot in the final line up, which I’m sure the models appreciated. So if you thought that being a model is all about the spotlights, the clothes and the fame, you better think again…

How to achieve flawless skin without retouching

Sunday, October 10th, 2010

We all want clear, bright skin: it makes a fantastic first impression, removing the need to use large amounts of makeup, and widespread photo editing. You don’t have to take toxic medication or got through intense treatment to make spot-free skin a reality. Here are some tips you should follow, if you want clear and flawless skin, wowing agents and clients alike.

Drink plenty of water and herbal tea

Water has anti-oxidant properties and health care professionals say you should be drinking eight 200ml glasses of it a day. That said, if you find water tasteless and unexciting, there is an alternative. Herbal tea is fantastic for your skin and your all round well-being. Ditch the sugary snacks and drinks and invest in some good herbal tea. Herbal tea often has a bad reputation for ‘tasting of grass’, but if you try different combinations, especially from the pukka range, you’ll be converted to the herbal side. My personal favourite from the range is the organic peppermint, spearmint and fieldmint tea.

Use bareMinerals make-up

Wearing makeup can be a vicious cycle. You wear makeup to cover up spots, but it clogs up your pores, creating more blemishes. Luckily for you, there is an alternative. Have you heard of makeup that contains minerals that actually works with your skin? Mineral makeup aids cellular growth, and doesn’t clog your pores. bareMinerals make up is an affordable alternative to your current makeup, creating a light or heavy coverage. Even with heavy coverage, you feel like you aren’t wearing anything at all! Better yet, bareMinerals make up gives your UVA/UVB sun protection and works against environmental stressors.

They offer a Customisable Start Up Kit with all of the essentials, including foundation, brushes, bronzer and primer, retailing at only £50.

Check out their other products on their website or find a local boutique near you to get a colour match.

Stop scrubbing and invest in Tea-tree oil

Have you been spending a small fortune on spot treatment scrubs and lotions? Stop that now. Scrubbing away at your face only rids your skin of essential natural oils that your skin needs to rejuvenate, creating more spots. Tea-tree has been used for hundreds of years for various ailments and skin problems. You too can join in with this age old tradition, and you will be amazed by the results. Put tea-tree in your moisturiser, hair conditioner and bubble bath, or try filling up a spray bottle with water and tea-tree oil, to use on your body and face after a hot shower. A couple of drops of tea-tree in any of your skin care products works wonders, cleansing your pores. So throw those scrubbing washes away and invest in some tee-tree oil, available from pharmacy outlets, such as Boots. Buy pure 100 percent tea-tree for the best results.
